President’s Report June 2011

Thoughts from the Oval Office

Hi Fellow Corvetters,

I was reminded again the other day of just how fast time passes us by, with the news that the Corvette Assembly Plant in Kentucky, will close 2011 orders at the end of May, and commence 2012 model year building in mid June.
Where did that year go?

I have read that 2012 may be the last full year of C6 production, with the C7 beginning its life midway through 2013 as a 2014 model. There’s plenty of speculation out there surrounding the introduction of Corvette’s seventh generation, but one thing’s for sure; the car that we love so much will continue to be produced well into the future.
The “Corvette hobby” that has flourished over the last fifty eight years has led to the formation of many Clubs like ours, where people like us, with a passion for Chevrolet’s finest fiberglass, can get together socially and share that passion. And we might have to get used to having a passion for Chevrolet’s classiest carbon fiber!
Just as our members come from a diversity of backgrounds and professions, Corvettes have come off the assembly line in many forms and with a great variety of options since 1953. As if there weren’t enough options available, many of us have further personalized our ‘Vettes and given them their own unique characters. And that’s something that makes this a great club to which to belong. Every time we take the ‘Vettes out on a run we learn a little more about our fellow members and their choice of Corvette, and broaden our knowledge of these amazing cars.

On Sunday 29th May your committee members hosted a BBQ lunch for some of the members who have recently joined us. The day was a great success, and it is hoped that these new friends will become regulars at club functions, and enjoy the events and camaraderie we have to offer. Members will be pleased to know that we have another beautiful red C1 and a lovely yellow C2, and a C3 chrome bumper with a very nice blue/green paint job in our ranks, that we will hopefully see much more of at future outings. Many thanks to the committee members and their partners who contributed to the planning and staging of this very worthwhile and successful event. I also wish to acknowledge the efforts of Col and Gail Clarke for making available their baseball club’s grounds and amenities for the day, as well as  assisting us with the supply of the goodies for the BBQ.

We have a busy schedule of events throughout June and July. The traditional Brass Monkeys Run will be a short drive to Berrima on Sunday 19th June, to enjoy a lunch and more tall stories at the Berrima Pub. I am not renowned for my navigating skills, (what happened in Melbourne was supposed to stay in Melbourne!) nor my knowledge of  the Southern Highlands, so we are keeping this one simple! This should be a good leisurely stretch of the Corvettes’ legs down the highway, and you will be back home in plenty of time to watch your footy team.

Your club needs you again on Saturday 25th June to help defend the Go Kart title we won at the
inaugural HSV v Corvettes club challenge last year. This is a fun outing that only a handful of people
take seriously. The rest of us just putt around and make up the numbers! Its all about power to weight,
and with each passing year, I seem to find more weight and lose some more power! Again this is a great
social outing and BBQ with our friends from the HSV Owners’ Club, so brush the cobwebs off the
driving shoes, and join your clubmates for a fun day at the Picton Go Kart track.

In the front of this month’s magazine you will find some details of the 2012 National Corvette Convention, “Vettes Rock The ‘Gong!” We have enclosed an Entry Registration Form as well as an Accommodation Booking Form for you to action. I hope that our club is able to field a strong representation of our members at this our home convention. One early bird entrant will receive free accommodation and breakfasts for the three days, so get those entries in early!
Glossy brochures detailing all aspects of the convention will be produced nearer to the event, but for now we just wanted you to have the necessary forms and information to enable you to get your entries in, and be a part of the Corvette Party!

As with all club events, if you need further information, give Gary Webster or myself a call.

If for some reason you still have not received your membership renewal form in the mail, please let Tracy know as soon as possible so we can arrange another.

Well that’s all for another month folks. I hope to see you on a run somewhere soon.

Gary Nelson
